There is plenty of low cost and free camping in WA – if you know where to look. From the forests of the southwest to the Coral Coast, Northwest Kimberley or remote Golden Outback, there are lots of camping options that won’t break the bank. There is even some low-cost camping near Perth.

Along with free camping in WA, we have included spots where you’ll pay $25 or less a night per vehicle. We note which sites have a maximum stay period. Because Western Australia is huge, we have split the low cost and free campsites into regions. So, whether you are planning a trip to Esperance, Broome or anywhere in between, you can find a great spot to stay.

Golden Outback Camping

The Golden Outback is huge, it covers nearly one half of Western Australia and encompasses areas of great historical value and natural beauty. On your Adelaide to Perth road trip the Golden Outback is your first taste of Western Australia. Having crossed the Nullarbor, you can head north to the rugged goldfields region or go south to the stunning coastline around Israelite Bay and Esperance.

The Golden Outback region of Western Australia has some amazing attractions and there is plenty of free and low cost camping near Kalgoorlie and Esperance. In Kalgoorlie visit the Super Pit and Museum of the Goldfields, around Norseman the lookouts, museums and ruins paint a colourful picture of the town’s bygone mining boom. In Esperance you have to check out the whitest sand in Australia at Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park and see the spectacular coastline on the Great Ocean Drive.

Camping in the southwest is a fantastic experience, it is an area of diverse natural beauty and home to one of Western Australia’s best food and wine regions. There are low cost and free campsites around the Valley of the Giants, Margaret River and the historic and beautiful town of Albany. Some of these campsites also give you access to hike parts of the Bibbulmun Track that runs between Albany and Perth.

With free and low cost camping near Albany, Bunbury, Pemberton and Margaret River, you can check out many of the area’s attractions. Get an insight to Australia’s whaling history or do some great coastal walks in Albany. Meet the Bunbury Dolphins or check out the aquarium at the end of the Busselton Jetty. Wine, dine or surf at Margaret River and see some of the tallest trees in the world in the Valley of the Giants near Pemberton.

Perth & Surrounds Camping

There are lots of low-cost camping options less than 2 hours from Perth. With plenty of great day trips from Perth you can choose whether you want to look around the Perth Hills, venture into the picturesque and historic Avon Valley or go on a wildflower safari, there are plenty of RV stops and campgrounds where you can find affordable accommodation.

Around 100km south of Perth you will find Lane Poole Reserve with multiple National Park Campgrounds. These low cost campgrounds are surrounded by 50,000 acres of bushwalks, mountain bike rides, 4wd trails and horse riding tracks. Bring the kayak and bathers for a dip or the fishing rod to cast a line. Lane Poole Reserve is the perfect spot to relax with picnic and bbq facilities for a weekend away.

The Perth to Exmouth road trip is one of our favourite holidays and if you love beautiful beaches, amazing snorkelling and marine life you’ll love it too. From Geraldton to Exmouth and everywhere in between, there are lots of fantastic low cost and free campsites and rest stops. Check out the campsites on Francois Peron Peninsula and the ocean front camping in Cape Range National Park, the views and value here is amazing.

With lots of free and low coast camping on the Coral Coast you can walk amongst the Pinnacles, swim with the sea lions at Jurien Bay, see the wildflower displays and breathtaking views in Kalbarri National Park, explore the amazing landscapes in the world heritage listed Shark Bay region, go snorkelling at Coral Bay and swim with Whale sharks on Ningaloo Reef. There are heaps of things to do in Jurien Bay, Geraldton and Exmouth and the free and low cost camping lets you take your time to see everything.

North West WA Camping

The Kimberley or Northwest of Western Australia is a bucket list destination for lots of travellers. From Karijini to Broome to Kununurra you’ll see boabs, stunning red rock gorges, spectacular coastline and giant tides. The incredible plateaus, fern-lined rock pools and palm-filled gullies are amazing to walk through, you’ll feel like you are in another world.

Fortunately, there is plenty of low cost and free camping in Karijini National Park where you can explore Weano, Hancock and Dales Gorge, the walks through here are amazing. You can free camp near Broome too while you relax on Cable Beach, go on a hovercraft ride or relax at the outdoor cinema. There are more beautiful gorges to explore at El Questo; Zebedee Spring and Emma Gorge are amazing.
