Broken Hill Caravan Parks

There are 3 main caravan parks in Broken Hill and the Penrose Park Recreation & Campground in nearby Silverton. The Caravan Parks in Broken Hill are all on or just off the Barrier Highway, but they are set well enough back that noise is not a problem.

A common feature of all the Caravan Parks in Broken Hill is that they are pet friendly.

Broken Hill Tourist Park

Broken Hill Tourist Park

If you are driving to Broken Hill from South Australia, Broken Hill Tourist Park is the first caravan park you come to. Like all the Caravan Parks in Broken Hill, it stretches along the Barrier Highway, it is right next door to the Broken Hill Cemetery so noisy neighbours shouldn’t be a problem – and it is a fascinating place to walk through.

Back to the park…this is a great spot. They have everything from unpowered sites to cabins. There is plenty of shade so you can relax under a tree. You can get ensuite powered sites and, best of all, the regular powered sites are drive through which makes life easy after a long drive.

Broken Hill Tourist Park has excellent facilities. There’s a pool, bouncy pillow for the kids, park Wi-Fi a good camp kitchen/BBQs and a kiosk and laundry. The amenities are fantastic – especially the roomy showers, much better than we have at home! There is a really nice mood at the park – it bubbles along with a friendly and relaxed vibe.

You will pay a little more here than at the other parks in Broken Hill, but you can see what the extra few dollars get you. Broken Hill Tourist Park is located near the centre of town and close to many of Broken Hill’s best attractions. The amenities and drive through sites alone are worth the extra money.

Broken Hill Outback View Holiday Park

Broken Hill Outback View Holiday Park

Previously known as the Broken Hill Lake View Caravan Park, the newly named Broken Hill Outback View Holiday Park is a bit of a hidden gem. It is on the eastern side of town tucked away just off the Barrier Highway. It is an older park, but new management are sprucing the place up and there is a lot to like about the place.

Facilities here include everything you would expect – a camp kitchen, laundry, BBQs and a swimming pool. The amenities are fantastic here too, Broken Hill is the place to go for a great caravan park shower! Accommodation ranges from unpowered sites to powered sites with or without an ensuite to a range of cabins and cottages.

Some parks just have a good vibe about them and that is what you get here. It feels spacious and quiet and friendly. There are some great views around the park including the easy to get to Lake View Lookout right outside the park which is a nice spot for sunset with views back towards the Line of Lode.

Broken Hill Outback View Holiday Park is a few dollars cheaper than Broken Hill Tourist Park, but it’s not missing much and it’s hard to imagine the friendly and enthusiastic new owners won’t keep making improvements.

Broken Hill Outback Resort

Another option to the two caravan parks in Broken Hill is Broken Hill Outback Resort. Pricewise, sites sit between the two parks in the centre of town. It is located 13km east of Broken Hill, has great views of the Barrier Ranges. The park is set just off the Barrier Highway, and has a completely different look and feel to those in town.

For starters, it is a little smaller than the other two parks and there is no bouncy pillow or pool or playground – something to consider if you are family travellers. But it does have lovely large, grassed sites – and that was in January – which makes it look like an oasis in the desert. The camp kitchen and amenities are new and spacious too.

A unique feature of the Broken Hill Outback Resort is that it is on the site of the Mount Gipps Hotel.  The pub originally opened in the 1890s and has opened and closed a few times since then. Now, it has been renovated and has a great bar, dining room and outdoor area. It’s a brilliant spot for a night out of your van.

Another highlight are the deluxe cabins which look out over the outback, and you can enjoy the views from your private balcony. Phone signal here is a bit sketchy, but the free park Wi-Fi does a pretty good job. We stayed here and didn’t find the drive in and out of Broken Hill was any problem.

Penrose Park Recreation & Campground

If you don’t mind the 20 minute drive and 39 dips between Silverton and Broken Hill, Penrose Park in Silverton is a great option in Broken Hill. It is an historic site, Penrose Park used to be the recreation hub for Broken Hill, now it is a great outback experience for travellers.

Located on the outskirts of Silverton and on the doorstep of the Mundi Mundi Plains, Penrose Park offers big powered, unpowered and tent sites along with cabin accommodation. Facilities are good with a nice camp kitchen and good amenities, a laundry and plenty of trees and shelters.

We had a fire place the last time we were here which was great for winter. Our kids had a ball staying here. There are tennis courts, a playground and a few animals roaming around. It’s a big place with plenty of room to explore.

To be honest, Penrose Park was looking a bit tired the last time we came through but to be fair it was off season and there were about 3 people in the park. Being so close to Silverton, its outback location and the facilities still make it worth a look, staying here is a really unique experience.

Broken Hill Racecourse

There is a big sign here as you arrive that describes it as a primitive campsite, but nothing could be further from the truth! You get to stay on grassed sites (no pegs allowed) around the racecourse, there are toilets and showers, drinking water and a dump point.

There are even some powered sites, along with unpowered sites and plenty of room for the biggest motorhomes and vans. There might not be a camp kitchen or laundry but that is the only ‘primitive’ thing about the place, it really is a hidden gem amongst the Caravan Parks in Broken Hill.

The racecourse is on Racecourse Road, about 5km from the centre of town which isn’t really a big deal. As a bonus you might see the odd horse being trained dearly in the morning and the old grandstands are a lovely sight. In peak season best call ahead to check there is room. The Broken Hill Visitor Centre will have a contact number for the onsite caretakers.
